RESEARCH / THE INERTIAL NOTEBOOK

At the edge
of what comes next.

How a system decides where to look, what to remember, and how to carry a goal from an idea into the world.

FEATURED DIRECTION / SPARSE INTELLIGENCE

A trillion weights.
The question is
which ones matter.

Aether is built around selection. In a model this large, the hard part is finding the few experts that matter for a given problem.

SIX CONNECTED DIRECTIONS

These notes lay out the ideas behind our models and systems. They are research questions and proposed tests. We have not published results.

The value of another thought.

Reasoning is partly a budgeting problem. A system has to decide which uncertainty deserves attention, which alternative could overturn a conclusion, and when more thinking has stopped helping.

Gravitas ties effort to consequence. A low-stakes question can get a fast approximation. A decision with lasting effects needs competing explanations, stated assumptions, and a stricter rule for when to stop.

THE QUESTIONCan a system spend more thought precisely where it improves the decision?
What would count as evidence

Compare answer quality, calibration, and compute used across problems with different consequences. Test whether new evidence changes the conclusion, and whether the extra reasoning added anything.

A memory that can change its mind.

Remembering gives a system continuity. It also lets a mistake last. Memory has to keep the evidence without making every interpretation permanent.

Context Field keeps observations, beliefs, permissions, and commitments apart. When a new fact arrives, the interpretation can change and a record shows what changed and why. Remembering and forgetting are both deliberate.

THE QUESTIONWhat should survive when the system discovers it was wrong?
What would count as evidence

Feed it contradictory evidence, stale assumptions, and withdrawn permissions over long tasks. Check that the belief updates, the source stays traceable, and no expired authority is kept.

Expertise without fragmentation.

Aether uses sparse computation across a 1.1-trillion-parameter architecture. The size matters less than how the right expertise reaches the right problem.

Prism Routing is designed to pick experts by affinity inside a shared reasoning frame. Each specialist should add something different while staying within the context and constraints the others rely on.

THE QUESTIONCan local specialization strengthen a coherent global answer?
What would count as evidence

Measure expert utilization, routing balance, transfer across domains, and real inference cost. A parameter count says little about intelligence or efficiency.

Make disagreement do useful work.

Independent coding engines will sometimes answer the same request differently. Hydra uses that disagreement to find hidden assumptions before they turn into defects.

Proof Mesh ties acceptance to evidence. Nothing is accepted because an engine says it is right. Each proposal has to show its work, and a revision reopens the checks it affects.

THE QUESTIONWhat does each contributor need to demonstrate before its work is accepted?
What would count as evidence

Measure end-to-end delivery, defects that escape, revision effort, and coverage quality. Separate checks that add information from tests that only repeat the implementation.

The room is part of the context.

An answer can be correct and still wrong for the moment. Who is nearby, which screen is available, and whether the subject is private all change how a system should respond.

Audience Field is our research into discreet delivery. When the system is unsure who is listening, it should use a private surface or ask quietly, and never assume.

THE QUESTIONHow should a system behave when it cannot tell who might overhear?
What would count as evidence

Test stale presence signals, shared rooms, withdrawn consent, and unclear identity. Check that private information stays private and the system is still useful.

Keep the mandate with the mission.

A long-running goal passes through many models, tasks, and decisions, and its authority has to travel with it. Without that, a useful delegation can quietly grow past its scope.

Intent Continuity keeps a lasting record of purpose, boundaries, dependencies, and decisions. Progress is judged against the current mandate, and a change to the mandate can redirect work already underway.

THE QUESTIONCan autonomy remain interruptible as its scope and duration grow?
What would count as evidence

Change priorities, expire permissions, give conflicting instructions, and leave work unfinished. Check that the system can explain where it stands and send consequential decisions back to the right person.

THE STANDARD BEHIND THE WORK

Bold ideas.
Careful claims.

An architecture is a hypothesis until it has been tested. We say which is which.
